Arts in Education Communication Parent Education Student Programs Youth Protection Other Programs

Arts in Education: This is an art awareness program designed to expose children to a wide array of liberal arts activities. National PTA sponsors the Reflections program, which provides students the opportunity to produce one, or more visual arts, literature, music, or photography projects based on the year’s theme and enter in the competition. An exhibit of the entries is displayed at school.

What is Reflections?
The PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts Reflections Program. The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create and submit works of art in six areas: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography, and film/video production. Each year, the Reflections Program challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme.  This program allows for children to have a chance to experiment and feel good about their artistic expression.

The deadline for Reflections this year is Tuesday, October 30.

Read more about the 2007-08 Reflections Program (page 14), and get entry form, general rules, arts area rules, and FAQ.

National PTA is looking for a Reflections theme for 2009-2010.  Use this form to submit theme ideas.

Art Auction:  The Art Auction night, held in conjunction with Hightower’s Open House, provides the opportunity for students to display artwork designed and completed during art class.  The artwork is “bid” on by parents and other adults using a silent auction format.  Proceeds are donated to our corporate partner, the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA).

Family Art Night:  An evening of creative, fun filled, hands-on art activities to learn and explore many art mediums.  The Classics, a well-known creative arts company in Plano, provides hands-on art stations (drawing, painting, metal-tooling, etc.) for everyone to enjoy.

Go Van Gogh:  Children participate in classroom art instruction and activities taught by parent volunteers who have been trained under the guidance of the Dallas Museum of Art.

Shoebox Art:  Art project supplies and instructions are organized in “shoe boxes” and available in the library for students to check out.

Triple M (Marvelous Monthly Musicians): A variety of musicians provide a glimpse of the wide world of music once a month at 7:30 am in the school.  We started the year with two wonderful performances: January featured the well rehearsed Hightower members of the 2006 Metroplex Children's Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Keen, and February brought us a former Hightower student for a wonderful solo piano performance.  Thank you Hightower and ex- Hightower Marvelous Musicians!

Please note: Triple M performances are held from 7:30 through 7:43 a.m. at the south entrance, between fifth and fourth grades and are open to students, parents and teachers.
