Bicycle Rodeo: This annual event provides a full safety check of the child’s bicycle, helmet, a review of basic bicycle safety, the “wait for the wave”, and a bicycle challenge course. Students also earn their own bike photo ID card. Third, fourth, and fifth grades ride the "Tiger Challenge Course" around Arrowhead Park. The program is available to all Hightower students. To participate, each child needs to bring his/her bicycle and helmet to school on the day of the Bicycle Rodeo. Child Safe: Any student who is absent and whose parents have not notified the school via the answering machine will be contacted by a Child Safe Volunteer to verify the absence. The Child Safe number is 469-752-1800, option #3. McGruff House: This child safety program, developed by police officers and sponsored by the Plano Police Department, ensures that neighborhood children have access to and can recognize homes where help may be obtained if needed. A PTA McGruff volunteer coordinates applications and training. All McGruff houses display the McGruff sign.
Red Ribbon Week: This is a national drug awareness program coordinated by the school counselor with help from the Student Council and STOP. Safety Patrol: The Carpool Safety program uses fifth grade students who are trained to assist students in the carpool lines at morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. STOP (Students Thinking of Peers): STOP is Hightower’s community service program. This school-wide program encourages students to participate in school-based community service projects. The school counselor and a parent STOP coordinator coordinate the program. |
